Utah Medicare Supplement Guide
A lot of people are opening their Medicare Supplement renewal letters lately and feeling shocked by the increase. Honestly, I understand why. Some of the rate increases we’ve seen recently have been substantial.
Recently, I worked with a Utah couple who received a 26.5% increase on their Medicare Supplement plan. After reviewing their options, we were able to move them to another company offering the same standardized Medicare coverage and reduce their premium by about $175 per month.
That does not mean everyone should switch plans. But it does show why reviewing your Medicare coverage periodically matters. If you’re not sure whether you’re on the right path, start with our Medicare Cost Calculator or compare the bigger picture on our Medicare Advantage vs Supplement guide.
Medicare Supplement plans, also called Medigap plans, are standardized by the federal government. That means a Plan G from one company provides the same core medical benefits as a Plan G from another company.
That is why a rate increase can be so frustrating. You may be paying more without getting “more coverage.” If you’re comparing Plan G and Plan N, this page may help too: Plan G vs Plan N comparison.
What changes between companies is usually:
Rate increases can happen with any Medicare Supplement company over time. Some of the biggest reasons include higher medical claims costs, healthcare inflation, an aging membership pool, closed blocks of business, and more overall Medicare utilization.
Not necessarily. This is one of the most misunderstood parts of Medicare Supplement insurance.
Since Medicare Supplement benefits are standardized, a Plan G generally provides the same medical coverage regardless of carrier. The difference is often the premium, rate stability, underwriting rules, and company pricing approach.

Honestly, I think one of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming they have to stay with the same company forever simply because that’s who they started with at age 65.
In some situations, reviewing rates may make a lot of sense. But switching is not always automatic or guaranteed.
In Utah, changing Medicare Supplement companies later may require medical underwriting depending on your situation. That means health questions could apply. If your health has changed, it’s important to review options carefully before dropping any current coverage.
This is especially important if you’re deciding between staying with Medigap or looking at Medicare Advantage. Lower monthly premiums can look attractive, but networks, copays, and future flexibility matter too.
Shopping may help when your increase is unusually large, when your company’s rates have moved far above the market, or when another company offers the same standardized plan at a meaningfully lower premium.
It may not help if your health makes underwriting difficult, your current rate is still competitive, or the savings are too small to justify moving.
That’s why I like to compare the numbers before making assumptions. Sometimes the answer is switch. Sometimes the answer is stay put.
