Humana Medicare Advantage Exits in 2027: The Grand Junction Guide

Humana says more plan exits are coming in 2027 — about 600,000 members nationwide will need to shop. No county list exists yet, but Mesa County's exposure is measurable: Humana holds 5 of the county's 16 plans, and 5 of its 8 PPOs. Here's the calm version of what to do.

The bottom line

  • On July 29, 2026, Humana told investors it will exit additional Medicare Advantage plans in 2027, affecting roughly 600,000 members — about 8% of its enrollment (Healthcare Dive). No plan, county, or state list exists yet.
  • Mesa County's stake, per the official CMS CY2026 landscape: Humana offers 5 of the county's 16 MA-PD plans — and 5 of its 8 PPOs. A Mesa County exit would mostly thin the PPO shelf.
  • Nearby it's thinner still: Montrose County has only 2 MA-PD carriers, and Humana is 5 of its 8 plans.
  • If a plan is discontinued you have strong rights: the Oct 15–Dec 7 AEP, a Dec 8–end of February Special Enrollment Period, and usually a guaranteed-issue Medigap window with no health questions — which matters in Colorado, where there's no annual switching rule.
  • The right move today is preparation, not panic: read your ANOC in October, and keep your doctor and drug lists current.

If you or a parent is on a Humana Medicare Advantage plan in Grand Junction, this week's headline deserves a careful read — not a scramble. Here's what was announced, what Mesa County's plan shelf actually looks like today, and exactly what your rights are if your plan turns out to be one of the discontinued ones.

600,000 seniors are about to lose their Medicare Advantage plan — and here's why Grand Junction should pay attention. On July 29th, Humana told investors it will shut down more of its Medicare Advantage plans in 2027 — about eight percent of its members nationwide. No county list exists yet. But here's what the official plan data shows: Humana offers five of Mesa County's sixteen Medicare Advantage drug plans — and five of its eight PPOs. If those plans go, it's the flexible, travel-friendly shelf that thins out. Watch your mailbox in October — if your plan is going away, a non-renewal letter spells it out. Your rights are strong: open enrollment October 15th through December 7th, a special enrollment period from December 8th clear through February — and when a plan leaves, you usually get a window to buy a Medicare Supplement with no health questions asked. What did Humana actually announce?

On its second-quarter earnings call on July 29, 2026, Humana — one of the two largest Medicare Advantage insurers in the country — said it will shut down more of its Medicare Advantage plans for 2027. Per Healthcare Dive's reporting, the exits affect about 600,000 of its roughly 7.2 million Medicare Advantage members — about 8% — and the company expects to recapture a meaningful share of those members in its remaining plans. CFO Celeste Mellet framed the exits as pruning lower-return plans to keep benefits stable in the plans that remain, on the way to a pre-tax margin target of at least 3% by 2028.

This is the second consecutive year of trimming: for 2026, Humana pulled Medicare Advantage offerings from three states and 194 counties (Healthcare Dive) — and still added over a million new members, because the plans it kept stayed competitive. Carriers redrawing their county maps each fall is now a recurring feature of this market, not a one-time shock.

How exposed is Mesa County?

Nobody knows which counties are on the 2027 list — that's not spin, it genuinely hasn't been decided publicly. The first county-level answer arrives when CMS posts the 2027 plan landscape in late September, and every affected member gets a written non-renewal notice in the fall.

What we can do is measure today's footprint. From the official CMS CY2026 landscape file (standard MA-PD plans, excluding Special Needs Plans):

Two details in that data are worth a Grand Junction reader's attention. First, every one of Humana's five Mesa County offerings is a PPO — the plan type people choose for out-of-network flexibility, snowbird travel, and specialist access beyond the valley. A Humana exit here wouldn't just remove five plans; it would remove five of the county's eight PPOs. Second, the neighboring counties lean harder on Humana than Mesa does: Montrose County has just 2 carriers, with Humana supplying 5 of 8 plans, and Delta County 5 of 15. If your parents or clients are down-valley, their bench is shorter than Grand Junction's.

What are my rights if my plan is discontinued?

Medicare's rules exist precisely because plan exits happen every year:

  • You never lose Medicare itself. A plan exit ends a private contract; your Part A and Part B are untouched.
  • Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15 – Dec 7): pick any 2027 plan available in Mesa County, effective January 1.
  • A dedicated Special Enrollment Period: per Medicare.gov, members of a plan whose contract isn't renewed can switch to another plan between December 8 and the last day of February.
  • A guaranteed-issue Medigap window: when an Advantage plan leaves Medicare or your area and you return to Original Medicare, you generally have the right to buy Medigap Plan A, B, C, D, F, G, K, or L with no medical underwriting, within 63 days after your coverage ends (Medicare.gov). Plans C and F are limited to people who were Medicare-eligible before January 1, 2020. Keep the non-renewal letter — it's your proof.

That last right carries extra weight in Colorado. Unlike a handful of states, Colorado has no annual "birthday rule" that lets Medigap policyholders switch without underwriting — outside your one-time turning-65 window, carriers here can ask health questions and decline you. A plan non-renewal is one of the few events that reopens the no-health-questions door. For someone who chose Advantage years ago and has since picked up health conditions, that window can be the most valuable thing in this entire story.

The row that decides how this goes for you is the second one: the letter. Every fall we sit with people who tossed the envelope from their plan unopened and discovered in January that a doctor was out of network — or the plan no longer existed. Whatever Humana's 2027 map turns out to be, the members who do fine are the ones who read their October mail and compare calmly in November.

What should Grand Junction enrollees do right now?

  1. Don't switch anything today. There is no 2027 lineup to switch to yet, and your 2026 coverage is unchanged through December 31.
  2. Confirm your plan has your current mailing address, so the ANOC or non-renewal notice actually reaches you.
  3. Keep a current list of your doctors and prescriptions — including any specialists beyond the valley. If you shop, network and formulary fit decide the right replacement, not premium.
  4. Read the ANOC in October, even if your plan survives: benefits, drug tiers, and networks change annually even in continuing plans.
  5. If your plan is discontinued, weigh both doors: another Advantage plan via AEP or the Dec 8–Feb SEP, or Original Medicare + Medigap + Part D through the guaranteed-issue window — especially if PPO-style flexibility was why you chose your plan, since that's the shelf a Humana exit would thin.

How we know all this: the Medicare On Main Data Desk frames every article with public data — here, Humana's July 29, 2026 announcement as reported by Healthcare Dive, the official CMS CY2026 landscape file for the Mesa, Montrose, and Delta county plan shelves, and Medicare.gov's published enrollment-period and guaranteed-issue rules — plus qualitative guidance for anything (like the 2027 county list) that isn't public yet. Mentioning a carrier is not an endorsement or a criticism; plan availability is a fact of the market. This is education, not advice; confirm your plan, costs, and eligibility with a licensed agent or Medicare.gov. We take no payment from any carrier to feature a plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is Humana leaving Medicare Advantage in Grand Junction in 2027?

That hasn't been announced. On its July 29, 2026 earnings call, Humana said it will exit additional Medicare Advantage plans in 2027 — roughly 600,000 members nationwide, about 8% of its enrollment — but it has not published a plan, county, or state list. The Mesa County answer becomes public when CMS releases the 2027 plan landscape in late September and affected members receive written non-renewal notices in the fall. Until then, no one can tell you whether a specific Grand Junction plan is staying or going.

How much of Mesa County's Medicare Advantage market is Humana today?

A meaningful share. Per the official CMS CY2026 landscape file, Mesa County has 16 standard Medicare Advantage drug-coverage (MA-PD) plans from 5 carriers — and Humana offers 5 of the 16. The concentration is even sharper by plan type: all five Humana offerings are PPOs, which is 5 of the county's 8 PPO plans. If Humana's 2027 exits were to touch Mesa County, it's the PPO shelf — the plans with out-of-network flexibility — that would thin the most.

What happens if my Medicare Advantage plan is discontinued at the end of the year?

You never lose Medicare itself. If your plan's contract isn't renewed, you can pick a new plan during the Oct 15–Dec 7 Annual Enrollment Period, and per Medicare.gov you also get a Special Enrollment Period from December 8 through the last day of February to switch to another plan. If you take no action, you're returned to Original Medicare (Parts A and B) on January 1 — with no drug coverage and no out-of-pocket maximum, so doing nothing is a decision too.

Can I buy a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan if my Advantage plan leaves?

Usually, yes — with no health questions. When a Medicare Advantage plan leaves Medicare or stops serving your area and you return to Original Medicare, federal guaranteed-issue rights let you buy Medigap Plan A, B, C, D, F, G, K, or L sold in Colorado (Plans C and F only if you were Medicare-eligible before January 1, 2020), generally within 63 days after your coverage ends. Colorado has no annual 'birthday rule' switching window, so outside your turning-65 window this kind of guaranteed-issue event is one of the few no-underwriting doors into Medigap. Keep the non-renewal letter — it's your proof.

Should Grand Junction enrollees switch plans now because of this news?

No. There is no 2027 lineup to switch to yet — your 2026 coverage runs unchanged through December 31, and acting on a headline is how people land in the wrong plan. The productive steps now: confirm your plan has your current mailing address, keep an up-to-date list of your doctors and prescriptions, and commit to actually reading your Annual Notice of Change when it arrives in October.

Does Medicare On Main charge for help if my plan is discontinued?
