Humana Medicare Advantage Exits in 2027: What Utah Should Know
Humana says more plan exits are coming in 2027 — about 600,000 members nationwide will need to shop. Which plans and counties? Not announced yet. Here's what the news actually means for Utah, and the calendar that matters.
The bottom line
- On July 29, 2026, Humana told investors it will exit additional Medicare Advantage plans in 2027, affecting roughly 600,000 members — about 8% of its enrollment — as it works toward a margin target for 2028 (Healthcare Dive).
- No plan, county, or state list exists yet. The 2027 landscape goes public in late September, and affected members get a written non-renewal notice in the fall.
- Utah has real exposure to watch: per the CMS CY2026 landscape, Humana is on the shelf in 23 of Utah's 28 counties — and in 9 of them it's one of only two MA-PD carriers.
- If a plan is discontinued, you have strong rights: the Oct 15–Dec 7 AEP, a Dec 8–end of February Special Enrollment Period, and usually a guaranteed-issue window to buy Medigap with no health questions.
- The right move today is preparation, not panic: read your ANOC when it arrives, and have your doctor and drug lists ready.
If you or a parent is on a Humana Medicare Advantage plan in Utah, this week's headline deserves a calm read, not a scramble. Here's what was actually announced, what it could mean county by county in Utah, and exactly what your rights are if your plan turns out to be one of the discontinued ones.

600,000 seniors are about to lose their Medicare Advantage plan — and here's what that actually means if you're in Utah. On July 29th, Humana told investors it will shut down more of its Medicare Advantage plans in 2027 — about eight percent of its members nationwide. Now, before anyone panics: no county list exists yet. Not for Utah, not for anywhere. The real answer arrives in your mailbox this fall — every member gets an Annual Notice of Change in October, and if your plan is going away, a non-renewal letter spells it out. And your rights here are strong. You can pick a new plan during open enrollment, October 15th through December 7th. You get a special enrollment period from December 8th clear through February. And here's the one most people miss: when a plan leaves, you usually get a window to buy a Medicare Supplement with no health questions asked. So don't switch anything today — just read your mail this fall. As always, get your free copy of Medicare Breakdown — The Alphabet Soup of Medicare. The link is right below this video. What did Humana actually announce?
On its second-quarter earnings call on July 29, 2026, Humana — one of the two largest Medicare Advantage insurers in the country — said it plans to shut down more of its Medicare Advantage plans for 2027. Per Healthcare Dive's reporting, the exits affect about 600,000 of its roughly 7.2 million Medicare Advantage members — about 8% — and the company expects to recapture a meaningful share of those members in its remaining plans. CFO Celeste Mellet framed the exits as pruning lower-return plans so the company can keep benefits stable in the plans it keeps, on the way to a pre-tax margin target of at least 3% by 2028.
This is the second consecutive year Humana has trimmed its footprint: for 2026 it pulled Medicare Advantage offerings from three states and 194 counties (Healthcare Dive) — and yet still added over a million new members, because the plans it kept stayed competitive. That context matters: carriers reshaping their county maps each fall is now a normal, recurring feature of the Medicare Advantage market, not a one-time event.
Is Utah affected?
Nobody knows yet — including, quite possibly, Humana's own local agents. The announcement named no states, counties, or plan IDs. The first public, county-level answer arrives when CMS posts the 2027 plan landscape in late September, and every affected member gets a written non-renewal notice in the fall.
What we can show you is Utah's current exposure. From the official CMS CY2026 landscape file:

The county list is the part worth understanding. In the Wasatch Front's big counties — Salt Lake, Utah, Davis, Weber — a carrier exit stings but leaves a deep bench of alternatives. In Beaver, Emery, Garfield, Grand, Kane, Millard, Piute, Rich, San Juan, Humana is currently one of just two MA-PD carriers. If a thin-bench county ever loses a carrier — any carrier — the remaining choices narrow fast, and the Medigap-plus-drug-plan route deserves a harder look. That's a structural fact about rural Utah's Medicare market that this news puts a spotlight on, whatever Humana ultimately decides county by county.
What are my rights if my plan is discontinued?
Medicare's rules here are genuinely protective — they exist precisely because plan exits happen every year:
- You never lose Medicare itself. A plan exit ends a private contract; your Part A and Part B are untouched.
- Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15 – Dec 7): pick any 2027 plan available in your county, effective January 1.
- A dedicated Special Enrollment Period: per Medicare.gov, members of a plan whose contract isn't renewed can switch to another plan between December 8 and the last day of February.
- A guaranteed-issue Medigap window: when an Advantage plan leaves Medicare or your area and you return to Original Medicare, you generally have the right to buy Medigap Plan A, B, C, D, F, G, K, or L with no medical underwriting, within 63 days after your coverage ends (Medicare.gov). Plans C and F are limited to people who were Medicare-eligible before January 1, 2020. Keep the non-renewal letter — it's your proof.
That last one is easy to underrate. Outside your turning-65 window, Utah carriers can normally ask health questions before selling you a Medigap policy (Utah's new birthday rule only covers same-carrier switches for people who already own Medigap). A plan exit is one of the few events that reopens the no-health-questions door — for some people, that's the silver lining in this kind of news.

The single most important row is the second one: the letter. Every fall we meet people who tossed the envelope from their plan unopened and found out in January that their doctor was suddenly out of network — or their plan no longer existed. Whatever Humana's 2027 map turns out to be, the members who do fine are the ones who read their mail in October and compared calmly in November.
What should Utah enrollees do right now?
- Don't switch anything today. There is no 2027 lineup to switch to yet, and your 2026 coverage is unchanged through December 31.
- Confirm your plan has your current mailing address, so the ANOC or non-renewal notice actually reaches you.
- Keep a current list of your doctors and prescriptions. If you do end up shopping, formulary and network fit — not premium — decide the right replacement.
- Read the ANOC in October, even if your plan survives: benefits, drug tiers, and networks change annually even in continuing plans.
- If your plan is discontinued, weigh both doors: another Advantage plan via AEP or the Dec 8–Feb SEP, or Original Medicare + Medigap + Part D through the guaranteed-issue window. In Utah's thinner-bench counties, take the Medigap comparison seriously before the 63-day clock runs out.
How we know all this: the Medicare On Main Data Desk frames every article with public data — here, Humana's July 29, 2026 announcement as reported by Healthcare Dive, the official CMS CY2026 landscape file for Utah's county-by-county carrier picture, and Medicare.gov's published enrollment-period and guaranteed-issue rules — plus qualitative guidance for anything (like the 2027 county list) that isn't public yet. Mentioning a carrier is not an endorsement or a criticism; plan availability is a fact of the market. This is education, not advice; confirm your plan, costs, and eligibility with a licensed agent or Medicare.gov. We take no payment from any carrier to feature a plan.
Frequently asked questions
Is Humana leaving Medicare Advantage in Utah in 2027?
That hasn't been announced. On its July 29, 2026 earnings call, Humana said it will exit additional Medicare Advantage plans in 2027 — affecting roughly 600,000 members nationwide, about 8% of its enrollment — but it has not published which plans, counties, or states are affected. The county-by-county 2027 picture becomes public when CMS releases the 2027 plan landscape in late September and plans mail their annual notices. Until then, nobody can tell you whether your specific Utah plan is staying or going.
How will I know if my Medicare Advantage plan is going away in 2027?
Your plan must tell you in writing. Watch your mail in late September and October: every Medicare Advantage member gets an Annual Notice of Change (ANOC), and members of a discontinued plan get a non-renewal notice explaining that coverage ends December 31 and what their options are. Read that letter carefully — it is the official word, not a headline. If you're unsure what your letter means, bring it to a licensed local agent or call 1-800-MEDICARE.
What happens if my Medicare Advantage plan is discontinued at the end of the year?
You don't lose Medicare — ever. If your plan's contract isn't renewed, you can pick a new plan during the Oct 15–Dec 7 Annual Enrollment Period, and per Medicare.gov you also get a Special Enrollment Period from December 8 through the last day of February to switch to another plan. If you take no action, you're automatically returned to Original Medicare (Parts A and B) on January 1 — but note that Original Medicare alone has no drug coverage and no out-of-pocket maximum, so doing nothing is a decision too.
Can I buy a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan if my Advantage plan leaves?
Usually, yes — this is one of the few times underwriting is waived. When a Medicare Advantage plan leaves Medicare or stops serving your area and you return to Original Medicare, federal guaranteed-issue rights let you buy Medigap Plan A, B, C, D, F, G, K, or L sold in your state (Plans C and F only if you were Medicare-eligible before January 1, 2020), generally within 63 days after your coverage ends. Keep the plan's non-renewal letter — you may need it to prove your right. For many Utah retirees this window is a rare second chance at Medigap without health questions.
Should I switch plans now because of this news?
No — there's nothing to switch to yet, and acting on a headline is how people end up in the wrong plan. The 2027 plan lineup doesn't exist publicly until fall. The smart moves now: make sure your mailing address is current with your plan, plan to actually read your ANOC when it arrives, and keep a current list of your doctors and prescriptions so you can compare quickly if your plan is affected.
Does Medicare On Main charge for help if my plan is discontinued?
No. Brian Penner is an independent licensed Medicare advisor with 22+ years of experience, paid by the carriers, not by you.
