Is There a Social Security Office in Moab for Medicare?

No, there isn't. Medicare sign-up goes through Social Security, and the nearest offices are two hours away in Price or across the state line in Grand Junction. The good news is that most people in Moab never need to make that drive. Here is how signing up works from Grand County, and the few cases where a trip makes sense.

The short answer

  • No office in Grand County. The nearest are in Price, Utah and Grand Junction, Colorado, about two hours each way.
  • You can sign up online or by phone at 1-800-772-1213. Medicare.gov calls online "the easiest and fastest way."
  • Already on Social Security? If your checks started at least four months before 65, Medicare signs you up automatically.
  • Your card comes by mail about two weeks after you apply. You need it before you can pick a plan.

Where the nearest offices are

Moab's paper, the Times-Independent, put it plainly in 2025: "The closest offices to Grand County are in Price, Utah, and Grand Junction, Colorado — each approximately a two-hour drive from Moab." Grand County's own website lists the Grand Junction office, at 825 N Crest Dr., as the nearest.

The state line doesn't matter. The paper notes that "the SSA provides services regardless of an individual's place of residence," so a Moab resident can walk into the Grand Junction office. The Wasatch Front and St. George offices are farther still and, per the same article, "typically require appointments." Call ahead before you drive to any of them.

Online is the route I point most Moab clients to. Medicare.gov says you'll need "your secure my Social Security account to sign up for Medicare or apply for benefits." Creating the account includes an identity check, so set it up a few weeks before you plan to apply rather than in the last days of your window.

On the phone, be clear about what you want. If you're signing up for Medicare but holding off on Social Security checks, say "Medicare only." Our post on getting Medicare at 65 without taking Social Security explains why that matters.

When you won't have to sign up at all

Some people don't apply for anything. Medicare.gov: "You automatically get Medicare when you turn 65 (as long as you start getting Social Security benefits at least 4 months before you turn 65)." The card shows up in the mail three months before your coverage starts. If you're still working with coverage from a large employer, read the instructions that come with it. You can keep Part A and turn Part B down until you retire.

Everyone else applies, and the timing matters. Your sign-up window is seven months long, centered on your birthday month, and when you apply sets when coverage begins. Our post on when Medicare coverage starts at 65 has the month-by-month table. Social Security sometimes asks for an original or certified birth record. If it does, ask how to send it before you plan a trip. Our sign-up documents checklist lists what it can ask for.

After the card comes: what is on the shelf in Grand County

Social Security handles Parts A and B. Everything after that is a separate choice, and in Grand County there are fewer options than in a city. CMS's 2027 landscape files list 18 Medicare Advantage plans for Grand County, all from two companies: 10 from UnitedHealthcare and 8 from Humana. Six of the 18 are special needs plans for people with Medicaid or certain conditions. Four have no drug coverage. If you go with Original Medicare and a supplement instead, 8 stand-alone Part D drug plans serve all of Utah for 2027.

Most of the county takes that second route. Of 2,296 Grand County residents on Medicare in July 2026, 1,756 were on Original Medicare, per CMS enrollment data. One reason is the drive. Many Moab retirees see specialists in Grand Junction or Salt Lake, and Original Medicare with a Medigap plan works at any provider in the country that takes Medicare. The other reason is timing. The time to buy a Medigap plan with no health questions is the six months after your Part B starts. Our post on Medigap Open Enrollment in Utah covers that window, and Moab plan changes for 2027 covers what changed on each of the 18 Advantage plans.

Local help without the drive

  • Utah SHIP offers free, unbiased Medicare counseling by phone. See our post on what Utah SHIP does.
  • A licensed agent can compare the plans they offer in Grand County and help you enroll once you have your Medicare number. We do this by phone or video for Moab, and you never have to leave town.
  • Our Turning 65 page lays out the whole sequence, from the first letter to your first plan.

I have been helping people with Medicare for more than 22 years, and in a town like Moab the paperwork is rarely the hard part. The hard part is matching a plan to where you actually get care. Sign up from your kitchen table, then give yourself time for that decision.

How we know all this: the Medicare On Main Data Desk frames every article with public data. Here that means Medicare.gov's "How do I sign up for Medicare?" page; the Times-Independent's April 2025 report on Social Security offices near Grand County; Grand County, Utah's website; CMS's 2027 Medicare Advantage and Part D landscape files; and CMS's Medicare Monthly Enrollment data for Grand County, July 2026, all read October 24, 2026. Office addresses and hours can change, so confirm with Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 before you travel. Carrier names are factual reporting, not endorsement. This is education, not advice. Confirm your enrollment with Social Security or Medicare.gov, and compare plans with a licensed agent. We take no payment from any carrier to feature a plan.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the closest Social Security office to Moab, Utah?

Price, Utah and Grand Junction, Colorado, each about a two-hour drive, according to the Moab Times. Grand County's own website lists the Grand Junction office at 825 N Crest Dr., Grand Junction, CO 81506. Social Security serves people at any office regardless of where they live, so a Utah resident can use the Colorado one.

Can I sign up for Medicare without going to a Social Security office?

Yes. Medicare.gov lists online sign-up at Social Security as "the easiest and fastest way," using a my Social Security account. You can also call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). Railroad workers call the Railroad Retirement Board at 1-877-772-5772. Your Medicare card arrives by mail about two weeks after you sign up.

Do I have to sign up for Medicare if I already get Social Security?

Not if your Social Security benefits started at least four months before you turn 65. Medicare.gov says you get Part A and Part B automatically and Medicare mails your card three months before coverage starts. If you're still working with employer coverage, you can turn Part B down at that point; follow the instructions that come with the card.

How long does it take to get a Medicare card after you apply?

Medicare.gov says it mails a welcome package with your Medicare card about two weeks after you sign up. If you get Medicare automatically, it arrives three months before your coverage starts. You need the Medicare number on that card before you can join a Medicare Advantage, Medigap or Part D plan.

Can I apply for Medicare by phone in Utah?

Yes. Call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213. The line serves every state, so a Moab or Monticello caller gets the same service as someone in Salt Lake. Expect a hold, and have your Social Security number and any employer health plan dates ready before you call.

Turning 65 in the next 6 months? 🎂

Your situation is different from someone whose plan is ending

A plan-ending member picks a replacement. Someone new to Medicare gets a one-time window: your Initial Enrollment Period is 7 months (the 3 months before your 65th-birthday month, that month, and the 3 months after), and Medigap open enrollment is the 6 months after your Part B starts — any Medicare Supplement, no health questions. Miss it and the same policy can be denied or cost more for life.

A 15-minute call maps your exact dates, Part B timing if you are still working, and whether Medigap or Medicare Advantage fits first — in person in Moab, Monticello or Grand Junction, or by phone wherever you live. No cost, no obligation. We do not offer every plan available in your area.
