The letter, and what it does not mean

Federal rules require a plan that is not renewing to notify each member by mail at least 90 calendar days before the plan ends (42 CFR § 422.506); for a December 31 end that puts the notice at October 2, and Medicare.gov describes the same letter (when a plan is no longer available in your area). It is a separate envelope from the Annual Notice of Change, which every plan sent by September 30. A plan that merely left this county while continuing elsewhere sends the same kind of notice to its members here.

The letter does not mean you are losing Medicare; Parts A and B are untouched. It does not mean your doctors are leaving. And it does not mean you need to call anyone to cancel: the plan ends on its own on December 31. Keep it. It is the document that proves your Medigap right.

Your three doors

  1. Another Medicare Advantage plan from the 8 companies still in Tarrant County, chosen during October 15 – December 7 so it starts January 1 (Medicare.gov). Compare in this order: your doctors and hospital, your prescriptions, the in-network cap, then the premium.
  2. Original Medicare plus a Medigap policy plus a stand-alone drug plan. The exit opens the door: per Medicare.gov, when your plan leaves Medicare or your area you may buy Medigap Plan A, B, D, G, K or L with no health questions, applying as early as 60 days before and no later than 63 days after your coverage ends: November 1, 2026 through March 4, 2027. Plans C and F only if you were Medicare-eligible before 2020. No network: any provider that accepts Medicare. Texas has 10 stand-alone drug plans for 2027.
  3. Original Medicare plus a drug plan, no Medigap. Lowest premium, no network, no annual cap on your 20% share. Price it against your health before accepting it.

If you miss December 7, a discontinued plan also gives you a Special Enrollment Period from December 8 through February 28 to pick another Advantage plan (42 CFR § 422.62), but a plan chosen in January starts February 1, and January would be spent in Original Medicare with no drug coverage. A safety net, not a plan.

What I would do this week

  1. Find both letters, the Annual Notice of Change and any non-renewal notice, and put the second one where you can find it in February.
  2. Write down every doctor you see, every prescription, and your pharmacy. Nothing can be compared until that list exists.
  3. Decide the door before the plan. Advantage versus Medigap is the bigger decision. If you lean Medigap, the window opens November 1; there is no reason to wait for December.
  4. Ignore the phone calls. A plan ending is a magnet for marketing. Nobody can enroll you in a 2027 plan before October 15, and no legitimate agent needs your Medicare number to "check" anything.
  5. Enroll between October 15 and December 7. Earlier is fine; CMS says the last enrollment request wins, so you can change your mind inside the window.

How we know all this: the Medicare On Main Data Desk frames every page with public data, here the CMS CY2026 and CY2027 landscape files compared by Contract Plan ID, CMS's September 2026 county-level enrollment report, CMS's September 28, 2026 state fact sheets, and the federal rules and Medicare.gov pages on non-renewal notices, enrollment periods and Medigap guaranteed-issue rights. Mentioning a carrier is factual reporting, not endorsement or criticism. This is education, not advice; confirm plans, costs and eligibility with a licensed agent or Medicare.gov. We take no payment from any carrier to feature a plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is my Medicare Advantage plan ending in Tarrant County for 2027?

18 general Medicare Advantage plans sold in Tarrant County, Texas in 2026 are not offered here for 2027: AARP Medicare Advantage from UHC TX-0005 (H1278-013); Wellcare Giveback (H0174-018); Aetna Medicare Signature (H3288-016); HealthSpring True Choice Savings (H7787-001); Blue Cross Medicare Advantage Value (H9706-001); Blue Cross Medicare Advantage Choice Premier (H1666-003); AARP Medicare Advantage Patriot No Rx TX-MA06 (H1278-025); Humana USAA Honor Giveback (H5216-128); Blue Cross Medicare Advantage Dental Value (H9706-007); Blue Cross Medicare Advantage Optimum (H1666-022); Aetna Medicare Enhanced (H2293-025); Humana Gold Choice H8145-084 (H8145-084); BSW SeniorCare Advantage Essentials (H8142-010); Blue Cross Medicare Advantage Saver (H9706-008); Blue Cross Medicare Advantage Preferred (H8634-033); Humana Value Choice H5216-352 (H5216-352); Humana Value Choice H7617-043 (H7617-043); HumanaChoice H5216-042 (H5216-042). 15 of them do not appear anywhere in the CMS 2027 plan file and are being discontinued; 3 are still sold in other counties but no longer here. If your plan is on the list, you need to choose 2027 coverage between October 15 and December 7, 2026.

How many people in Tarrant County are affected?

18,606 people here were enrolled in the ending plans in September 2026, per CMS. Those counts are the plans' total September 2026 enrollment in this county, including any employer-group members, so the number of individual members choosing a new plan may be somewhat lower.

Which Medicare Advantage plans are new in Tarrant County for 2027?

5 general plans are listed for Tarrant County in 2027 that were not sold here in 2026: Aetna Medicare Enhanced Extra (PPO, H2293-039, $60 premium, $7,150 in-network cap); Aetna Medicare Signature (HMO, H4523-045, $0 premium, $7,150 in-network cap); Verda Noble Care (HMO, H5163-003, $0 premium, $2,399 in-network cap); Humana Value Choice (PPO, H7617-120, $0 premium, $6,950 in-network cap); Wellpoint Medicare Advantage Select (HMO-POS, H8849-032, $0 premium, $5,000 in-network cap). Listing a plan is not a recommendation.

Will I be moved to another plan automatically?

Not into a plan from a different company. If your plan is discontinued and you do nothing, you return to Original Medicare on January 1, 2027 with no drug coverage and no annual out-of-pocket cap. Some carriers do move members into a sister plan under the same contract; the non-renewal letter dated on or about October 2 says whether yours does. Read it, and keep it.

Can I buy a Medigap plan without health questions if my plan ends?

Generally, yes. When a Medicare Advantage plan leaves Medicare or your area and you return to Original Medicare, Medicare.gov says you have a guaranteed-issue right to buy Medigap Plan A, B, D, G, K or L (C or F if you were eligible for Medicare before 2020), applying as early as 60 days before and no later than 63 days after your coverage ends: November 1, 2026 through March 4, 2027 for a December 31 end date. Some states add further rights; ask.
