Veterans and Medicare

If you get your care through the VA, you have probably wondered whether you need Medicare Part B at all — and whether you are paying for coverage you already have. Those questions have real consequences, and the answer is different for VA health care, TRICARE For Life, and CHAMPVA. We will walk through yours, at no cost, whether or not there is anything for us to sell you.

What we go through

Four questions worth an answer

Whether you need Part B at all

This is the question we hear most. VA health care and Medicare are separate systems — VA care generally does not travel outside VA facilities, and it is not Medicare. Skipping Part B can also mean a late-enrollment penalty that never goes away. We walk through your situation before a deadline makes the decision for you.

How TRICARE For Life fits

TRICARE For Life requires you to keep Part B, and it pays as a second payer after Medicare. It also comes with its own pharmacy benefit — which is why adding a separate Medicare drug plan on top is usually redundant. We check how your pieces actually coordinate.

Whether a drug plan is duplicate coverage

If you already get prescriptions through VA or TRICARE, a plan that includes Medicare drug coverage may be paying for something you have. There are plan designs built specifically for veterans that leave drug coverage out. We look at what you'd actually use.

Whether your Part B premium can be reduced

Some Medicare Advantage plans in some counties reduce part of the Part B premium that comes out of your Social Security check. Availability and amounts vary by county and change every year, and it is not the right move for everyone — but it is worth checking, and most veterans have never had anyone check it for them.

Education, not advice — and not every conversation ends in a change. If your coverage is already set up correctly, we will tell you so. Official benefit rules are published at VA.gov and Medicare.gov.

Good questions

Before you book

Do I need Medicare Part B if I use VA health care?

It depends on your situation, and it is worth a real conversation before you decide. VA health care is not Medicare — it generally covers you at VA facilities, not at a community hospital or specialist outside the VA system. Part B is what covers you there. Delaying Part B without other qualifying coverage can also trigger a late-enrollment penalty that is added to your premium for as long as you have Part B. Medicare.gov and VA.gov publish the official rules, and we are glad to walk through how they apply to you.

Does TRICARE For Life require Medicare Part B?

Yes. TRICARE For Life requires you to be enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B and to keep Part B active. If Part B lapses, TRICARE For Life coverage is affected. TRICARE pays as a second payer after Medicare for TRICARE-covered services.

I already get my prescriptions from the VA. Do I need a Medicare drug plan?

Often not. VA and TRICARE pharmacy benefits are generally considered creditable drug coverage, which means you are not accumulating a Part D late penalty while you have them. Enrolling in a plan that includes Medicare drug coverage on top of that can mean paying for coverage you already hold. There are plan designs that deliberately leave drug coverage out for exactly this reason. Whether that fits you depends on where you fill prescriptions and what you take.

What is a Part B premium reduction?

Some Medicare Advantage plans include a benefit that reduces a portion of the Part B premium deducted from your Social Security payment. It is not available everywhere, the amount differs by plan and county, and it changes from year to year. It also should not be the only reason to choose a plan — the network, your doctors, and how the plan coordinates with your VA or TRICARE coverage matter more. We can tell you what exists in your county this year.

Does using an agent affect my VA benefits?

No. Your VA health care, TRICARE For Life, and CHAMPVA benefits are earned and are not affected by talking to us or by any Medicare decision we help you make. We are independent insurance agents. We are not affiliated with, and not endorsed by, the VA, TRICARE, or any government agency.

What does the call cost?

Nothing, and there is no obligation. Plenty of these calls end with us telling a veteran that their current setup is already right and to change nothing. Insurance companies pay our fee only if you later choose a policy through us.

Medicare On Main is an independent insurance agency. We are not affiliated with, and not endorsed by, the VA, TRICARE, CHAMPVA, or any government agency. We do not offer every plan available in your area. Plan availability, benefits, and any Part B premium reduction differ by county and change each plan year.
