Does Medicare Pay for Rides to the Doctor in Moab, Utah?

No, not unless you need an ambulance. Original Medicare doesn't pay for a car, shuttle or taxi to an appointment. Lots of national articles then point you to a Medicare Advantage plan with rides. So I pulled the 2027 federal benefit file to see which Grand County plans have them. It's a shorter list than those articles suggest.

The short answer

  • Original Medicare covers ambulances, not rides. Medigap doesn't add rides either.
  • None of Grand County's 12 general Advantage plans lists a ride benefit for 2027, according to CMS's file.
  • Four of the 6 special needs plans do. They list 24 or 36 one-way trips a year at a $0 copay, but you have to qualify for the plan.
  • Moab's practical help is local: the Grand Center and Moab Regional Hospital.

What the 2027 plan file says for Grand County

Nationally, KFF found that 24% of individual Advantage plans offered transportation for medical needs in 2026, down from 30% a year earlier, while 67% of special needs plans did. Grand County is starker. I matched CMS's 2027 benefit file to the 2027 landscape for all 18 Advantage plans sold here. Zero of the 12 general plans list the benefit, and I found no non-medical ride benefit for those plans either.

These are the four that list it:

PlanPlan IDOne-way trips a yearYou must have
UHC Dual Advantage UT-V1 (PPO D-SNP)H2001-04824Medicare and Medicaid
UHC Complete Care UT-6 (HMO-POS C-SNP)H4604-01724A qualifying chronic condition
HumanaChoice SNP-DE H7617-038 (PPO D-SNP)H7617-03824Medicare and Medicaid
Humana Dual Select H7617-039 (PPO D-SNP)H7617-03936Medicare and Medicaid

Source: CMS 2027 benefit file, section 10b; $0 copay to a plan-approved health-related location. The Humana rows flag authorization. Listing a plan is reporting, not a recommendation, and we do not offer every plan.

Do the math on those numbers. Because the trips are one-way, 24 trips means 12 round trips, about one appointment a month. The file doesn't say how far a trip can go or whether a ride to Grand Junction qualifies. Before you pick a plan for this benefit, call and ask three things: is there a mileage limit, does a Colorado specialist count, and how far ahead do you have to book?

The file reflects what plans filed with CMS for 2027, so read the plan's own Summary of Benefits to confirm. If you're in Monticello or Blanding, San Juan County looks similar: 0 of 11 general plans and 5 of 7 special needs plans, with HumanaChoice SNP-DE H5216-296 as the added plan.

Two local calls to make first

The Grand Center, 435-259-6623. The county's senior center at 182 N. 500 W. is open weekdays from 8 to 4:30 for adults 60 and older, and it runs monthly shopping trips to Grand Junction. A benefits directory says older adults can schedule rides there to medical appointments, stores and social events. People named the shuttle as a favorite service in the Council on Aging's survey, and the county council approved a bus driver in December 2025. I couldn't find a published schedule or fare, so call and ask whether it will fit your appointment.

Moab Regional Hospital, 435-719-3500. A state listing describes non-emergency rides to and from hospital appointments, weekdays from 8 to 4, at "no cost for clients who qualify through their provider." It can't take people who need medical equipment or monitoring on the way. The clinic scheduling your visit is the place to ask.

When Medicare really does pay: the ambulance

Part B covers an ambulance when "traveling in any other vehicle could endanger your health," per Medicare.gov, and only to the nearest appropriate facility. Non-emergency trips need a written order saying it's medically necessary. You pay 20% after the $283 deductible in 2026. Being unable to drive, or having no one to take you, doesn't meet that test on its own. If the ambulance company thinks Medicare might not pay, it must give you a written notice first, and you could end up paying. Dialysis patients face their own version of this, and I covered it in that post.

The long drive to Grand Junction

For a lot of Moab folks, the hard trip isn't across town. It's the roughly 220-mile round trip to a specialist in Grand Junction. Medicare doesn't reimburse gas or a motel, but a few things soften it:

Don't choose a whole health plan for its rides alone. A plan's doctors, drugs and out-of-pocket cap will matter far more over a year. But if you've stopped going to appointments because you can't get there, that's worth saying out loud during open enrollment, which runs through December 7. After more than 22 years of this, I'd much rather help you solve the ride than see you skip the care.

How we know all this: the Medicare On Main Data Desk frames every article with public data. Here that means CMS's 2027 plan benefit and landscape files, KFF's 2026 Medicare Advantage analysis, Medicare.gov's ambulance page, Utah 211, the Moab Sun News directory, BenefitsCheckUp, Grand County Council on Aging records, and IRS and VA pages, all read October 30, 2026. Carrier names are factual reporting, not endorsement. Medicare On Main is not affiliated with Grand County, Moab Regional Hospital or the VA. This is education, not advice. Compare plans with a licensed agent or Medicare.gov. We take no payment from any carrier to feature a plan.

Frequently asked questions

Does Medicare pay for transportation to doctor appointments?

Not in a car or van. Original Medicare pays for an ambulance when any other vehicle could endanger your health, and a non-emergency ambulance needs a written order from your doctor saying it's medically necessary. A ride from a neighbor, a shuttle or a taxi isn't covered. Some Medicare Advantage plans add a ride benefit, but none of the 12 general plans in Grand County do for 2027, according to CMS's benefit file.

Which Medicare Advantage plans in Moab include transportation?

For 2027, CMS's file shows four, and all are special needs plans: UHC Dual Advantage UT-V1, UHC Complete Care UT-6, HumanaChoice SNP-DE H7617-038 and Humana Dual Select H7617-039. They list 24 to 36 one-way trips a year at a $0 copay. Three of them require both Medicare and Medicaid, and one requires a qualifying chronic condition.

How can seniors in Moab get a ride to the doctor?

Start with two local calls. The Grand Center, the county's senior center, is at 435-259-6623, and a benefits directory says older adults can schedule rides to medical appointments there. Moab Regional Hospital's main number is 435-719-3500. A state listing says the hospital offers weekday rides to its own appointments, at no cost for people who qualify through their provider. Confirm details with each one.

Will Medicare pay for me to get to a specialist in Grand Junction?

Not for the drive, gas or a motel. An ambulance could be covered only if your condition makes any other vehicle unsafe, and Medicare pays only to the nearest appropriate facility. If you're on a plan with a ride benefit, ask whether a trip across the state line counts as a plan-approved location and whether it has a mileage limit.

Can I deduct mileage to medical appointments?

Possibly. The IRS's 2026 medical mileage rate is 20.5 cents, so a 220-mile round trip to Grand Junction counts as $45.10. It only helps if you itemize and your total medical expenses exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. Ask your tax advisor.

Turning 65 in the next 6 months? 🎂

Your situation is different from someone whose plan is ending

A plan-ending member picks a replacement. Someone new to Medicare gets a one-time window: your Initial Enrollment Period is 7 months (the 3 months before your 65th-birthday month, that month, and the 3 months after), and Medigap open enrollment is the 6 months after your Part B starts — any Medicare Supplement, no health questions. Miss it and the same policy can be denied or cost more for life.

A 15-minute call maps your exact dates, Part B timing if you are still working, and whether Medigap or Medicare Advantage fits first — in person in Moab, Monticello or Grand Junction, or by phone wherever you live. No cost, no obligation. We do not offer every plan available in your area.
