Medicare Advantage Hospital Copays in Grand Junction for 2027
Every general Advantage plan in Mesa County charges a daily copay for the first 5 to 7 days of a hospital stay, from $315 to $465 a day. A full stay costs $1,575 to $2,975, and the clock starts over with each admission.
The short answer
- Daily copay: $315 to $465, charged for days 1–5, 1–6 or 1–7, then $0 through day 90.
- Per admission: the copays start over every time you're admitted, not once a year.
- Against Original Medicare: the 2026 Part A deductible is $1,736 per benefit period. All 13 plans cost less for a three-day stay; only 2 do for six days or more.
- The ceiling: each plan's in-network limit, $4,900 to $9,850 for 2027, caps the year.
How a Mesa County plan bills a hospital stay
On Original Medicare, Part A charges one deductible, $1,736 in 2026, for days 1 through 60 of a benefit period. A benefit period ends once you've been out of the hospital and any skilled nursing facility for 60 days in a row. Days 61 to 90 cost $434 a day. CMS usually announces the 2027 amounts in mid-November, and they weren't out when this was written.
Advantage plans don't use that deductible. Every one of the 13 general plans sold in Mesa County for 2027 files the same shape in CMS's plan benefit file: a flat copay for each of the first few days, then nothing through day 90. None of them files a hospital deductible or a percentage. What changes from plan to plan is the daily amount and how many days it runs.
Two details from the file matter on the bill. First, all 13 plans set the period as per admission. Second, none of them charges for the day you go home.

The cheapest plan on this one line is not the cheapest plan overall. Humana Value Choice has the lowest daily amount, but its yearly cap is $6,250. Select Health Medicare Essential and HumanaChoice H5216-223 charge more per stay but cap the year at $4,900.
Where the $1,736 line falls
The honest comparison depends on how many days you're charged for. Using each plan's filed amounts:
- 3 charged days (say, in Monday and home Thursday): $945 to $1,395. All 13 plans come in under the 2026 Part A deductible.
- 4 days: $1,260 to $1,860. Eleven of 13 are under.
- 5 days: $1,575 to $2,325. Five of 13 are under.
- 6 days or more: $1,575 to $2,975. Only Humana Value Choice and Aetna Medicare Eagle stay under.
That's the comparison against Original Medicare by itself. With a Medigap Plan G or Plan N, the Part A deductible is paid by the policy, so your hospital share is usually $0 and the real cost is the monthly Medigap premium. If you're weighing that trade, read whether to switch from Medigap to Advantage first.

Book a call →The second admission is the one people miss
Because these copays run per admission, they can stack. Say you go into St. Mary's for five days in March and back in for five more in April. Original Medicare counts that as one benefit period, since you weren't out for 60 days in a row, so you'd owe one $1,736 deductible. On HealthSpring Preferred you'd owe $2,125 twice, or $4,250. On Humana Value Choice, $1,575 twice, or $3,150.
Readmissions after heart failure, pneumonia or a joint replacement aren't unusual, so this is worth checking before you pick a plan. The yearly cap is what stops it: once your covered medical costs reach the plan's in-network limit, the plan pays 100% for the rest of the year. Our 2027 out-of-pocket maximum post covers how that limit works.
Three things that change the bill at St. Mary's or Community Hospital
Observation status. Medicare.gov is clear that you're an outpatient, even after a night in a bed, until a doctor writes an order to admit you. Observation is billed under the plan's outpatient hospital costs, not the daily inpatient copay, so the numbers above don't apply. Ask which one you are.
Approval. CMS's file shows all 13 plans use authorization rules for inpatient stays. Emergencies don't wait for approval, but a planned surgery does. Your surgeon's office usually handles the request; confirm it's done before the date.
The network. These are in-network amounts. On an HMO, a hospital outside the network is generally covered only for emergencies. On a PPO it's covered at a higher cost. Check that the hospital and your specialists are in the plan's 2027 network, as I explain in will my doctor be in network.
Special needs plans
If you have Medicaid as well as Medicare, the answer is usually different. Most of Mesa County's 11 special needs plans don't file a daily hospital copay in CMS's data. HealthSpring TotalCare (H2752-009) files $290 a day for days 1–5. Your Medicaid coverage can change what you actually owe, so read how D-SNPs work in Grand Junction.
Hospital costs are one line, not the whole decision
The spread between the cheapest and costliest full stay here is $1,400. The spread between the lowest and highest yearly caps is $4,950. If you expect surgery or have a condition that tends to put you in the hospital, look at the cap first, then the daily copay, then your drugs. Open Enrollment runs through December 7.
How we know all this: the Medicare On Main Data Desk frames every article with public data. Here that means CMS's 2027 plan benefit and landscape files and Medicare.gov's hospital and cost pages, all read November 4, 2026. Benefits can differ in a plan's final documents, so confirm them in its Summary of Benefits and Evidence of Coverage. Carrier names are factual reporting, not endorsement. This is education, not advice. Compare plans with a licensed agent or Medicare.gov. We take no payment from any carrier to feature a plan.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Medicare Advantage pay for a hospital stay?
The plan pays the hospital and you pay a daily copay for the first few days. In Mesa County for 2027, the 13 general plans charge $315 to $465 a day for days 1 through 5, 6 or 7, then $0 through day 90. That's $1,575 to $2,975 for a full stay.
Is the Medicare Advantage hospital copay per day or per stay?
Both, in a way. You pay a daily amount, but only for a set number of days, and the count starts over with each new admission. CMS's 2027 file shows that per-admission rule on all 13 general plans in Mesa County.
Is the Part A deductible better than Medicare Advantage copays?
It depends on how long you stay. For 2026, Original Medicare's Part A deductible is $1,736 per benefit period. Every Mesa County plan charges less than that for a three-day stay. For a stay of six days or more, only two of the 13 do.
Do you pay a copay on the day you leave the hospital?
Not on these plans. All 13 general Mesa County plans file no cost sharing for the day of discharge, so a Monday-to-Thursday stay counts as three days.
Does observation status count as an inpatient stay?
No. Medicare.gov says you're an outpatient under observation, even overnight, until a doctor formally admits you. Outpatient care is billed under your plan's outpatient hospital costs, not the daily inpatient copay. Ask the nurse which status you're in.
What's the most I could pay for hospital stays in a year?
Your plan's in-network out-of-pocket limit caps it. For 2027, the 13 general Mesa County plans set that limit from $4,900 to $9,850, and it counts all your covered medical costs together, not just hospital bills.
