Does Medicare Cover a Gym Membership in Moab for 2027?

Not Original Medicare, and not Medigap. But 9 of the 12 general Advantage plans in Grand County file a fitness benefit for 2027, and the three that don't aren't the ones you'd guess.

The short answer

  • Original Medicare and Medigap: no gym or fitness program.
  • Grand County Advantage plans: 9 of 12 general plans file a physical fitness benefit at $0. All 6 special needs plans do too.
  • The three without one: UnitedHealthcare's two PPOs and HumanaChoice H5216-048.
  • The catch in Moab: a benefit only helps if a gym in town takes it. Check before you count on it.

What Medicare itself pays for

Medicare.gov lists gym memberships and fitness programs as not covered by Original Medicare. Humana's own explainer says the same: "Original Medicare (Parts A and B) generally will not pay for gym memberships or fitness programs." A Medigap policy only helps with costs for care Medicare covers, so it doesn't add a gym.

What Part B does cover is exercise as treatment. That means physical therapy, cardiac rehab after a heart attack or bypass, pulmonary rehab, and the Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program for people with prediabetes who qualify. A doctor has to order the first three, and you usually pay 20% after the Part B deductible.

Sources: CMS 2027 benefit file, section 14c (fitness benefit); premiums from the CMS CY2027 landscape. You still pay your Part B premium. Listing a plan is reporting, not a recommendation, and we do not offer every plan available in your area.

Every one of the nine files the benefit as physical fitness at a $0 copay. The split doesn't follow the carrier. UnitedHealthcare's four HMO-POS plans have it and its two PPOs don't. Humana's HumanaChoice H7617-016 has it and HumanaChoice H5216-048 doesn't. So "my carrier has SilverSneakers" isn't a safe guess. Check the specific plan.

Which program you'd get

CMS's file records that a plan has a fitness benefit, not the brand name. The carriers name their own. Humana says "SilverSneakers comes as a no-cost extra benefit in most Humana Medicare Advantage plans." UnitedHealthcare's program is Renew Active. Before you enroll, read the fitness line in the plan's 2027 Summary of Benefits, which names the program and what it includes.

Using it in Moab

This is where a small town differs from Salt Lake. A fitness benefit pays for a membership at a gym in the program's network. If no gym in town takes it, the benefit isn't worth much to you.

I couldn't find a current public list of Moab locations. The latest I found is a February 2020 Moab Happenings profile of South Town Gym, at 1070 South Highway 191, which said the gym "honors insurance programs such as SilverSneakers, Silver&Fit, Renew Active, and SelectHealth." That's six years old. Search the program's location finder for ZIP 84532, then call the gym and ask which programs it takes for 2027. If you spend part of the year somewhere else, check that ZIP too, and ask the plan whether you can use the benefit there. For coverage away from home generally, see Medicare travel coverage from Moab.

Monticello and Blanding

San Juan County has 11 general plans for 2027, and 10 of them file a fitness benefit. The two UnitedHealthcare PPOs aren't sold there, so HumanaChoice H5216-048 is the only one without. AARP Medicare Advantage UT-0005 (H4604-016) is sold in San Juan and not in Grand, and it files the benefit. All 7 San Juan special needs plans file one. The same rule applies: confirm that a gym in Monticello or Blanding is in the network before it sways your choice.

Don't let a gym pick your plan

A $0 membership is a real perk if you'll use it. But the plans here differ by thousands of dollars in yearly caps, and by which hospitals and pharmacies they use. Start with what's changing on your Moab plan, your doctors and your drugs. Then let fitness break a tie. If you have Medigap now, leaving it for a gym benefit is rarely a good trade, because you may not get that policy back. Open Enrollment runs through December 7.

How we know all this: the Medicare On Main Data Desk frames every article with public data. Here that means CMS's 2027 plan benefit and landscape files, Medicare.gov's coverage pages, the carriers' own fitness program pages and a Moab Happenings business profile, all read November 4, 2026. Benefits can differ in a plan's final documents, so confirm them in its Summary of Benefits and Evidence of Coverage. Carrier and program names are factual reporting, not endorsement. This is education, not advice. Compare plans with a licensed agent or Medicare.gov. We take no payment from any carrier to feature a plan.

Frequently asked questions

Does Medicare pay for a gym membership?

Original Medicare doesn't. Medicare.gov lists gym memberships and fitness programs as not covered, and a Medigap policy doesn't add one. Some Medicare Advantage plans include a fitness benefit. In Grand County, 9 of the 12 general plans file one for 2027.

Is SilverSneakers free with Medicare?

Not with Original Medicare. SilverSneakers comes with certain private plans. Humana says it's a no-cost extra in most of its Medicare Advantage plans. In Grand County, five of Humana's six general plans file a fitness benefit for 2027 at a $0 copay.

Which Moab gyms take SilverSneakers or Renew Active?

I couldn't find a current public list. A February 2020 Moab Happenings profile said South Town Gym on South Highway 191 honored SilverSneakers, Silver&Fit and Renew Active. That's six years old, so check the program's location finder for ZIP 84532 and call the gym.

Does Medicare cover exercise if my doctor prescribes it?

Some of it. Part B covers physical therapy, cardiac rehab and pulmonary rehab when they're medically necessary, and the Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program for people who qualify. Those are treatment, not a gym membership, and you usually pay 20% after the Part B deductible.

Should I switch plans to get a gym benefit?

Rarely on that alone. In Grand County, the three plans without one differ from the others in network, caps and drug coverage, and those matter far more. If you're on Medigap, a fitness benefit is a poor reason to give it up.

Turning 65 in the next 6 months? 🎂

Your situation is different from someone whose plan is ending

A plan-ending member picks a replacement. Someone new to Medicare gets a one-time window: your Initial Enrollment Period is 7 months (the 3 months before your 65th-birthday month, that month, and the 3 months after), and Medigap open enrollment is the 6 months after your Part B starts — any Medicare Supplement, no health questions. Miss it and the same policy can be denied or cost more for life.

A 15-minute call maps your exact dates, Part B timing if you are still working, and whether Medigap or Medicare Advantage fits first — in person in Moab, Monticello or Grand Junction, or by phone wherever you live. No cost, no obligation. We do not offer every plan available in your area.
