Will the VA Pay for Care at Moab Regional Hospital?
It can, but usually only if your VA care team approves it first. An emergency is the exception, and that one comes with a 72-hour clock. When the VA doesn't approve the care, Medicare is what stands between you and the bill.
The short answer
- Planned care: get VA approval before the appointment.
- Emergencies: the VA must hear about it within 72 hours. Call 844-724-7842 if the hospital hasn't.
- Medicare and the VA can't pay for the same service. You choose one each time.
- Network status: we found no published list for Moab Regional, so ask before you go.
Who pays in five common Moab situations
| Where you get care | Who pays | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| A visit at the Moab VA clinic | VA | Medicare pays nothing at a VA facility |
| Care at a local hospital or specialist with VA approval first | VA | The doctor can't bill you or Medicare for the approved services |
| A hospital stay the VA approved only in part | VA, then possibly Medicare | Medicare may pay for covered services the VA didn't authorize |
| The Moab Regional ER | VA if notified and eligible | Have someone report it within 72 hours |
| A local doctor, no VA approval | Medicare, if you have it | Without Part B, you may owe the whole bill |

Why living in Moab can open the door
The VA's community care rules start with two requirements: you're enrolled in or eligible for VA health care, and your VA team approves the care first. Then at least one condition must apply. For Moab, the one to ask about is usually distance.
Federal rules set the line at a 30-minute average drive or 20-day wait for primary care, and a 60-minute average drive or 28-day wait for specialty care. The Moab VA clinic at 702 S. Main St. offers primary care, lab work, audiology, podiatry, nutrition and telehealth, so the drive test may not help with routine visits in town. It's a different story for a specialist the clinic doesn't have. The VA hospital in Grand Junction is about 110 miles away, well past a 60-minute drive.
That doesn't make approval automatic. The VA runs the drive-time calculation, and your care team makes the referral. If it denies your request, the VA has a clinical appeals process.
The one thing I can't tell you
I looked for a published statement of whether Moab Regional or a given Moab specialist is in the VA's community network, and I didn't find one I'd rely on. So ask both sides: the clinic at 435-268-7960 and the provider's billing office. Before the appointment, ask for the approval in writing and check which services and dates it covers. That last part matters because of the next section.
When the VA approves only part of a hospital stay
Medicare's booklet covers this case: if the VA authorizes services at a non-VA hospital but not everything you receive during the stay, "Medicare may pay for the Medicare-covered services the VA didn't authorize." A veteran with no Part A or Part B has no such backup for that gap. The same booklet says a doctor who bills the VA for authorized services must accept the VA's payment as payment in full.

Book a call →If you land in the Moab ER
Go. Sort out the paperwork afterward. The VA says it "must get the notification within 72 hours of when your emergency care starts." The hospital should report it through the VA's portal or at 844-724-7842, but you or a family member can make that call too, so ask someone to check.
Missing the window isn't an automatic denial, though you'd then have to meet the stricter rules for unauthorized emergency care. If your other insurance charges you a copay, the VA says it can't reimburse it. Show your Medicare card too, so the hospital has every option on file. For a minor problem, the VA's urgent care benefit is separate and uses in-network providers. Copays there are $30 in some cases, and the VA bills you later.
Where Medicare fits for a Moab veteran
The VA says "We don't bill Medicare or Medicaid," and it encourages veterans to sign up for Medicare anyway. Part B costs $202.90 a month in 2026, and it lets you see a non-VA doctor who takes Medicare without waiting on a referral. Whether that's worth it depends on how much of your care the Moab clinic can handle and how you'd pay for a surprise in between. The penalty math is in the Part B late-enrollment post, and the wider enrollment question is in do I need Medicare if I have VA benefits. The Medicare rules there apply in Utah too.
If you get prescriptions through the VA, you may not want a plan with drug coverage. The CMS 2027 file lists four Grand County Advantage plans without it, all with a $0 plan premium: AARP Medicare Advantage Patriot No Rx (HMO-POS) and three Humana USAA Honor Giveback (PPO) versions. Their in-network out-of-pocket limits run from $5,100 to $9,150, and you still pay your Part B premium. Ask any of them in writing how they treat a VA-authorized stay. Listing them is reporting, not a recommendation, and we do not offer every plan available in your area.
Monticello and Blanding
The same VA and Medicare rules apply at San Juan Health in Monticello and Blue Mountain Hospital in Blanding. The difference is the drive: you're farther from the Moab clinic, so ask whether the 30-minute primary care standard helps you. The same four no-drug plans are listed in San Juan County for 2027.
How we know all this: the Medicare On Main Data Desk frames every article with public data. Here that means 38 CFR § 17.4040, VA's community care, emergency, urgent care, other-insurance and Moab clinic pages, Medicare's other-insurance booklet and the CMS CY2027 landscape, all read October 31, 2026. VA decides VA eligibility and copays, so confirm yours with VA. Carrier names are factual reporting, not endorsement. Medicare On Main is not affiliated with the VA, Moab Regional Hospital, San Juan Health or Blue Mountain Hospital. This is education, not advice. Compare plans with a licensed agent or Medicare.gov. We take no payment from any carrier to feature a plan.
Frequently asked questions
Does the VA pay for care at a non-VA hospital?
It can. The VA generally requires approval from your VA care team before you see a community provider, with exceptions for certain urgent and emergency care. You must also meet at least one eligibility condition, such as a service the VA doesn't provide or a drive or wait over its standards.
Can I use VA and Medicare at the same time?
You can have both, but they can't pay for the same service. Medicare's booklet says you choose which coverage to use each time you get care. The VA pays for what it authorizes, and Medicare pays for Medicare-covered care you get outside that authorization.
What is the VA's drive time rule for community care?
A 30-minute average drive or 20-day wait for primary care, mental health and extended outpatient care, and a 60-minute average drive or 28-day wait for specialty care. The VA calculates the drive from your home using mapping software.
Do I have to tell the VA if I go to the ER in Moab?
Yes. The VA must be notified within 72 hours of when your emergency care starts. The hospital should do it, but you or someone acting for you can call 844-724-7842. Late notice isn't an automatic denial, but stricter rules then apply.
Will Medicare pay my VA copay?
Don't count on it. Medicare doesn't pay for care at a VA facility, and the VA says it doesn't bill Medicare. Ask the VA what you'd owe based on your priority group before you schedule.
Do I need Part B if I use the Moab VA clinic?
It's your call, but the VA itself encourages signing up for Medicare as soon as you can. Part B lets you see non-VA doctors without VA approval, and delaying it can mean a penalty that grows each year.
